The Caregiver and the Legsim User
Nick, the very happy ED Legsim User:
I have not used a wheelchair, crutches or the "dreaded walker" since
getting the ED Legsim. Thank goodness!!! The Legsim makes it much easier and faster
to get around when I am not wearing my prosthetic leg. The more natural positioning
of my body on the Legsim eliminates the wrist, knee and foot stress caused with a
regular walker.
Unlike a typical walker, I do not have to bear down to move. I can just sit on
the Legsim when necessary and only use my good leg for balance. Now I don't even think
about reaching for items overhead. Both hands are free and I'm not standing on one
leg as I was with the regular walker or crutches. Hartford Walking Systems has
definitely improved my quality of life. Joe Schrader's misfortune led to the Legsim and
that is providing independence and saving physical wear-and-tear for me and others.
Marianne, the Caregiver:
The ED Legsim has helped give my husband back his independence and freedom, and I
no longer have to listen to him complain about the "despised walker."
Nick uses
the Legsim in the morning before putting on his prosthetic leg (he is an above
the knee (AK) amputee) and in the evening after he removes it. Some days
the "putting on" can be pretty late in the morning. No more listening to him
griping about wearing out his good leg when using the regular walker. We have
always shared household duties but since his accident, I had to do most of
them. Using a wheelchair, crutches or the regular walker limited Nick's ability
to help out. My nerves were wearing thin, and I was not always pleasant to be
around. He certainly wasn't either. Now he can empty the dishwasher, get food from
the fridge, and even share in other household activities. Also the ED Legsim is
a boon for our traveling. Before, it was pack the wheelchair, the walker and crutches.
Guess who did that? Now, Nick wears his prosthetic leg, puts the Legsim in the car
and off we go. My stress level has gone down and we are both more relaxed. Life is
closer to normal now.
